Contributing to sustainable future cycles across the global stage

Ground work for the future

What future cycles does Flowers to Roots envision?

We envision...
Being sustainable without destroying the natural environment
Rebuilding regional ecosystems across Japan that are in danger of dying
Delivering local products made through fair processes
Promoting both local production for local consumption and sharing with the world
Providing a place where everyone can learn and practice
Creating borderless, enjoyable communities for workers, learners, and supporters alike

How will we contribute?

We will solve issues through our media-based EC platform

The products featured in the Flowers to Roots project come from unique and rare skills as well as environments that have played a long-standing role in global and local cycles but are now at risk of being lost. Our mission is to create a platform where customers can support these efforts by purchasing products while understanding the rich histories and backgrounds behind them.

The cycles and regions we want to connect to our future

Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture

Entire town is one factory

The production of ceramic wares for usage in everyday life has continued in Hasami for approximately 400 years. It took root as a local industry in Hasami and was passed down from generation to generation. Even today, approximately 2,000 people are involved in the ceramic industry of this town, which boasts the second largest share of the daily tableware market in Japan. There is a network that intertwines both blood relationships and local ties, like an extended family in a broad sense. However, if they continue creating with the closed connections of a limited group, their creativity will decline. The old men at the kilns earnestly consider proposals brought by the younger generation or ideas from outside designers. By taking these ideas seriously, the artisans infuse their skills with new energy, keeping them alive and relevant.

The ingenuity not only to have people buy Hasami wares, but also to attract visitors to the region

In this town, challenges have been emerging that go beyond the traditional boundaries of the ceramics industry. One potter has created a hub for artistic expression and education, while a local trading company is developing tourism initiatives and systems to repurpose the residual heat from pottery kilns for agriculture. Today, the town has become a destination in its own right, attracting visitors even outside of its renowned pottery market. Over its 400-year history, the town has undoubtedly seen its share of both prosperity and poverty, even times when the industry teetered on the brink of collapse. However, just as plants that seem withered in winter sprout anew and bloom in spring as if nothing had happened, the pottery industry here has taken deep root in this land, thriving with remarkable resilience.

Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture

A lake of continuous cycles of life

Lake Biwa's origins trace back approximately 4.4 million years, believed to have formed from water accumulating in the ground following a major earthquake-induced collapse. Typically, lakes dry up within about 10,000 years, yet Lake Biwa persists. It owes its longevity to ongoing crustal movements, facilitating its renewing life cycle amidst climate and ecosystem changes. Small cycles gather and interact which form larger cycles. The larger cycles are supported by smaller cycles which have sustained Lake Biwa's 4.4 million-year history of life cycles.

The Story of the Pearl of Lake Biwa

On this festive stage, the spotlight should be on Lake Biwa's pearls. Their luminous glow akin to moonlight and their diverse forms are gifts created by the abundant cycles of Lake Biwa; these beautiful and mysterious treasures have been captivating our hearts since ancient times. One ancient poet expressed these sentiments in verse:
The pearl that sleeps in Lake Biwa/I have longed for you all this time/I secretly dreamed of touching you, even just once/But now that I have you, I am even more intensely captivated

PRODUCTS

Hasami Ceramic Ware

Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture

Hasami ceramic ware has a history of approximately 400 years, created in a region where unique and diverse handicrafts are gathered. The superb techniques handed down from generation to generation are being simplified and starting to disappear due to the lack of craftsmen and the increasing focus on efficiency by mass production. Furthermore, the earth's resources for making pottery are finite. We carefully select and showcase Hasami ceramic ware which embody ingenuity in resource use and preservation of these rare, invaluable techniques.

Freshwater Pearls

Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture

Pearls from Lake Biwa have been part of the cycle of Lake Biwa for so long that they are mentioned in the Manyoshu, the oldest Japanese poetry anthology. At their peak, Lake Biwa pearls were so beautiful and popular that jewelers from all over the world visited to purchase, calling them "BIWA pearls". However, this naturally occurring gemstone is sensitive to environmental conditions, making them difficult to cultivate. Today, with only a handful of producers who can withstand the changes in the natural environment, the pearls are in danger of extinction, becoming rarer and rarer.

Flowers to roots
birds to old nests
we continue forward.

The project name "Flowers to Roots" comes from a Japanese proverb: “Flowers return to roots, birds to old nests.” It means that flowers fall at the base of the tree and fertilize the tree just like birds return to their roosts. It is a metaphor for how all things eventually return to their origins. We sincerely hope to help create future cycles for our way of life, which have been intricately connected to this Earth and passed on over generations.
