Fukuharu Seihakuji Chamfered Lowball Glass (Mentori)
This is a striking lowball glass made using the mentori chamfering technique. It has been coated with the translucent pale blue glaze of seihakuji porcelain and finished with a deep blue line on its rim. This one-off piece has been handmade on a potter's wheel before being chamfered by hand. Its warm, hand-crafted shape is accentuated by its pale blue luster, creating beautiful shading that fluctuates in the light.
Seihakuji porcelain
Seihakuji porcelain is a thin, translucent type of white porcelain that changes into a pale blue after glazing. The appeal of this type of porcelain comes from the delicate shading created by its glaze. The subdued and elegant hues are produced by traces of iron found in the glaze, which blues through reduction firing.
Yakino Workshop Fukuharu
Fukushige Hisaya is a traditional craftsperson who inherited the techniques for using the potter's wheel and creating seihakuji pale-blue porcelain. At Yakino Workshop Fukuharu, where he presides, he pursues expression through ceramics with unique techniques and textures while focusing on handmade porcelain rather than mass-produced pieces. Since building his workshop in 2001, he has been highly acclaimed at multiple exhibitions, such as the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramic Exhibition, including two Governor's Awards at the Nagasaki Ceramics Exhibition.
He produces one-of-a-kind pieces by combining the traditional hand-carving techniques characteristic of Hasami ware, such as shinogi ridges, tobikanna dimpling, and mentori chamfering, with glazes such as sehakuji pale-blue porcelain and tenmokuyū oil-drop glaze.
